Characterization of suitable habitats to preserve
Santa Maria's goldcrest

The Santa Maria's
goldcrest (Regulus regulus sanctaemariae) is the unique endemic bird subspecies
from Santa Maria Island
(Azores) and displays the IUCN status of
Critically Endangered due to the reduced land area of the island and the
fragmentation of their natural habitats. However, there are no detailed studies
on its relative abundance and ecology. This project aims to extend the
knowledge about the diversity of breeding passerines in Santa Maria island, and in particular the
distribution and relative abundance of this subspecies along its natural
habitats.
